Weekly Challenge – June 4

Finally! I got the Cowboy quilt finished!

Did any of you happen to catch my note (see item 9 on my list) about how my QQB friends made fun of me and said I’d be whipping down the binding the day of the show?

They weren’t wrong.

But it’s finished, and will be hanging in our guild’s annual quilt show tonight and tomorrow. I didn’t want to disappoint My Cowboy by not getting it finished so it could hang in the show, so I pulled an all-nighter, and here it is . . .

This quilt was a guild challenge piece. Every year our guild offers a challenge to the members, and this time it was to divide up in groups, pick a theme, and then all make blocks for each other according to rules that your group can make up themselves. My group had four members, and we chose a Cowboy theme. We agreed to make 6 blocks for each other, so that we’d each end up with 24 blocks in the end. Then we could do whatever we wanted with them.

My Cowboy chose that big center applique. We bought it down at the IQA Show in Houston last fall. He also chose the size — LARGE! The quilt measures 96″ square. I had to add lots of extra stuff to my 24 blocks. I used some Lynn Brown panels, some applique motifs, and lots of western fabrics. It was a very fun quilt to make, just very big and time consuming. This is my Finish #20 for this year — woohoo! I’m too tired from the quilting marathon to properly convey how excited I am to have this finished.

My Cowboy hasn’t even seen it yet — I jerked it off the frame, bound it while he was sleeping, and whisked it off to the quilt show while he was out building fence! I hope it wins a ribbon, and I can present it to him as a prize-winning quilt . . . I’ll let you know.

And now, to pick a project for this coming week’s Weekly Challenge. The Cowboy Quilt is gonna be a tough act to follow. Plus, I think I need something easy after that!

Oh — I know — I’ll do a double-whammy . . . two things that HAVE to get done this week anyway.

1) Finish up some sample blocks I’m setting together for a customer.

2) Finish binding two customer quilts and deliver them back to her.

Getting these two things off my plate will make me feel much better, and they’ll be easy, cuz they’re almost done as it is!

What will YOU be doing this week?
